My name is Lucy Brookes, I am a 37-year-old mother of two from England. I became interested in feminism and women's' issues for many years. And have researched and documented women studies issues for over ten years.
Before I started researching the wide and varied issues under the umbrella of women studies, I believed that the feminist fight had been won.
Girls are doing better than boys at school, which is of great concern to the government. However would that concern be just as great if it was the girls underachieving.
You see highflying women in powerful positions in the world such as, being Prime Minister (Margaret Thatcher) or fighting to become the first female President of the United States of America(Hillary Clinton).
But as you will see through my articles that these are just a very small minority of women and they have had to fight very hard to achieve their goals.
Furthermore women are still made to feel guilty for having a successful career, using childcare, being a single mother or having to many sexual partners.
Many things in society are still gouvenered primarily by men, for example in most western governments a high percentage of the representatives will be made up of men. Also in the media many of the bigwigs are men with a tiny number of women in being placed in high positions.
My articles in the future will concentrate on the many different aspects of feminism and women issues. Feminists cannot be pigeon holed into one category as they all have different issues and agendas that they believe are important.
Not all feminists agree on everything as can be seen through the ‘feminist sex-wars' of the 1980's.
Also feminism has been slated as being ethnocentric in their ideology towards women's issues. They have been accused of seeing issues only from a white middle class woman's perspective.
So with the different dimensions of feminism it has splintered into May sub-categories. For example you now have Black Feminism, Radical Feminism and Ecofeminism to name a few.
Feminism and issues that concern women are not the same the world over. The sub categories have gone to some length to address the inadequacies faced by all women in society.
